Bridal makeup for the wedding day typically costs somewhere between Rs 10,000 and Rs 30,000 with an established artist in most Punjab cities, with freelance options starting around Rs 5,000 and well-known or celebrity artists charging Rs 50,000 to well over Rs 1 lakh. The number on the quote matters less than what it covers, though. Two Rs 20,000 packages can be very different once you add hair, draping, lashes, travel and family makeup, so read this before you compare.
What you get at each price level
These are rough ranges based on current listings and published price guides. Prices vary by city, season, the artist's experience and what is included, so treat them as a starting point for your own quotes rather than a rate card.
- Freelance and local artists: roughly Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 for the bridal look. Many work from home or visit you, and the best of them are excellent value. Check the products they use and whether hair is included.
- Established artists and studios: roughly Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000 for the wedding look, more once hair, draping and a full team are added. You usually get a proper trial, a hairstylist and an assistant.
- Top-tier and celebrity artists: roughly Rs 50,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh or more. Ask directly whether the senior artist will do your makeup personally or only supervise.
A "starting from" price usually means one look, at the studio, with the artist's standard products and base hairstyle. Your actual quote will almost always be higher.
What a bridal package usually includes
There is no standard package. Ask each artist to confirm, item by item, which of these are in the price:
- Trial: some include it, some charge a fee and adjust it against the booking, some don't offer one at all.
- Hairstyling: often included in studio packages, but hair extensions, fresh flowers and accessories are usually extra.
- Draping: lehenga or saree draping and dupatta setting, including pinning the dupatta on your head for the Anand Karaj.
- Lashes: strip lashes are commonly included; lash extensions are a separate service.
- Jewellery setting: fixing the maang tikka, nath, passa and kaleere so they sit right and stay put.
- Touch-ups: whether the artist stays, sends an assistant, or just leaves you a small kit.
- Family makeup: mothers, sisters and cousins. Regular party makeup for relatives is commonly quoted at roughly Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000 per person with mid-range artists.
- Travel: whether home or venue service is included, and how far.
Extra charges that catch families out
Most budget surprises come from extras nobody discussed at booking. Look out for these.
An early-morning surcharge is common. The Anand Karaj takes place in the morning, which can mean makeup starts at 4 or 5 am, and many artists charge extra for very early call times.
A second look on the same day is billed separately. If you change from your wedding lehenga into a reception outfit, a fresh hairstyle and refreshed makeup is effectively another booking.
Outstation work adds travel, a hotel stay for the artist and team if they arrive the night before, and sometimes food. Get these written as fixed amounts, not "as actuals".
Extra people added on the morning itself are hard for the artist to fit in and are often charged at a higher rate. Fix your family list a week before.
Taxes may or may not be included. Ask whether the quote is inclusive of GST so you are comparing like with like.
Booking makeup for several functions
A Punjabi wedding can easily run to six or seven events: roka or chunni, sangeet, mehendi, jaggo, maiyan, the wedding and the reception. Booking one artist for several functions usually brings the per-look price down, but you do not need full bridal makeup for all of them.
Many brides book the main artist for the wedding and reception, a lighter party look for the sangeet, and keep the mehendi and maiyan almost makeup-free, since you will be sitting for hours with paste on your hands or getting vatna applied. Spend where the cameras and the guests are.
How to compare quotes fairly
1. Ask every artist for an itemised quote in writing: bridal look, hair, draping, lashes, trial, each family member, travel and any early-hours charge.
2. Line the quotes up against the same list. If one artist includes hair and draping and another doesn't, add the missing items to the cheaper quote before comparing.
3. Confirm who will actually do your makeup. A lower price from a big studio may mean a junior artist.
4. Ask what the price is for the look you actually want. Heavy traditional bridal, a soft modern look, HD or airbrush base: some artists price these differently.
5. Check timing. An artist with three brides booked on the same morning may be rushed. Ask how many bookings they take per day.
6. Look at unedited photos of recent brides in daylight, not just filtered reels. That tells you more about value than the price does.
Advance, cancellation and what to put in writing
In peak wedding season, roughly November to February in Punjab, good artists get booked months ahead. Start shortlisting four to six months before the wedding and book once your date and venue are fixed.
Most artists ask for an advance to block your date, with the balance due before or on the wedding day. Before you pay, get these points in writing, even on WhatsApp:
- Date, call time, address and the list of functions.
- Exactly who is getting ready and which looks are included.
- Total amount, advance paid, balance and when it is due.
- What happens to the advance if you cancel, or if the wedding date moves.
- What happens if the artist falls ill: is there a named backup artist?
Advances are often non-refundable, but many artists will move the advance to a new date if you postpone with enough notice. Agree on this at booking, not after a problem comes up.
Frequently asked questions
How much does bridal makeup cost in Punjab? With an established artist, the wedding-day look typically falls roughly between Rs 10,000 and Rs 30,000, with simpler options from around Rs 5,000 and premium artists charging considerably more. Hair, draping, travel and family makeup can change the total a lot, so compare full quotes.
Is the makeup trial free? Not always. Some artists include it, some charge a fee that is adjusted if you book, and some only offer trials for a separate charge. Either way, a trial is worth doing for the wedding look.
Is airbrush bridal makeup more expensive than HD? Usually a little, though some artists charge the same for both. If you're torn between the two, ask for both prices in one quote and book a trial of each.
How far in advance should I book a bridal makeup artist? For winter wedding dates, four to six months ahead is sensible, and earlier if you want a popular artist on an auspicious date.
