15 Questions to Ask a Bridal Makeup Artist Before You Book

3 min read · 06 Oct 2026

Your bridal makeup will appear in almost every photo you keep for the rest of your life, so choosing the artist deserves more than a quick look at an Instagram feed. Two artists with equally beautiful portfolios can work very differently on the day.

These questions help you compare artists fairly and catch the details that cause the most wedding-morning stress. Ask the same questions to each artist you are considering, and write the answers down.

About their work

1. Can I see full, unedited photos of brides you have done recently? Filtered close-ups show skill with editing, not necessarily with makeup. Ask for photos taken in natural light and from different angles.

2. Have you worked with skin like mine? Ask specifically about your skin tone, skin type (oily, dry, sensitive, acne-prone) and any concerns you have. A confident artist will explain how they would approach it.

3. Which looks are you strongest at? Some artists excel at soft, natural looks; others at bold, traditional bridal makeup. Make sure their strength matches what you want.

Trial and planning

4. Do you offer a trial, and is it included in the price? A trial is the best way to avoid surprises. Find out whether it is charged separately and whether that charge is adjusted against the final package.

5. How many changes can we make after the trial? Agree on this before booking, so adjustments on the day are expected rather than awkward.

6. Will you do my makeup yourself, or will an assistant? Many popular artists have teams. That is fine, as long as you know who will actually work on you.

Products and hygiene

7. Which brands and products do you use? You don't need to be an expert, but well-known professional brands and a willingness to tell you about them are good signs.

8. How do you handle sensitive skin or allergies? Mention any allergies early. Ask whether they can do a patch test during the trial.

9. How do you keep brushes and products clean? Hygiene matters more than most brides think to ask. Clean brushes and disposable applicators are a sign of a careful professional.

The wedding day

10. What time will you arrive, and how long will my makeup take? Work backwards from the time you need to be ready, and leave a buffer. Bridal makeup with hair and dupatta setting can take several hours.

11. Is hair styling and draping included? Some packages include hair, saree or lehenga draping and dupatta setting; others charge separately. Get it in writing.

12. How long will the makeup last, and will you stay for touch-ups? Weddings are long. Ask whether the artist stays for the ceremony, leaves a touch-up kit, or offers a separate package for the reception.

13. Do you travel to the venue, and what are the travel charges? Confirm travel costs, especially for early-morning starts or venues outside the city.

Money and booking

14. What is the total cost, and what does it include? Ask for a clear breakdown: bridal makeup, hair, draping, lashes, family members' makeup, travel and any extra events such as mehendi or reception.

15. How much is the advance, and what is your cancellation policy? Know what happens if dates change. A written confirmation with the date, time, location and total amount protects both of you.

Before you decide

Shortlist two or three artists, book trials if you can, and pay attention to how quickly and clearly they answer. The artist who listens carefully and explains things honestly during planning is usually the one who stays calm and reliable on the day itself.
