How to Budget for an Indian Wedding Without Losing Track

Every family starts wedding planning with a number in mind, and almost every family ends up spending more than that number. It's rarely one big overspend — it's a dozen small ones that add up faster than expected.

Here's a realistic starting split for a mid-sized Indian wedding, as a share of your total budget: venue and catering usually take the largest portion, often 35 to 45 percent once you include food, staff and rentals. Decor and mandap setup typically run 15 to 20 percent. Photography and videography sit around 10 to 12 percent. Clothing and jewellery vary enormously by family but commonly land around 15 percent. The remaining share covers invitations, transport, gifts and the inevitable last-minute additions.

That last category — the last-minute additions — is where most budgets actually break. Three patterns show up again and again.

The first is guest count creep. A budget built for 300 guests quietly becomes 380 once far-flung relatives and plus-ones are confirmed, and per-plate catering costs don't forgive that kind of drift.

The second is decor upgrades made in person. A quote that looked reasonable on a call often grows once you're standing in the actual venue and start picturing floral walls, better lighting, or a bigger mandap. None of this is wrong to want — it's just worth budgeting a deliberate contingency for it upfront rather than discovering it as overspend later.

The third is vendor overlap. Families sometimes book a decorator who also offers lighting, then separately book a lighting vendor, without realising the two quotes cover the same thing. Getting an itemised quote from every vendor — not just a round number — makes this kind of overlap much easier to catch before you've paid for the same service twice.

A simple habit that helps: keep 10 to 12 percent of your total budget unassigned from day one, and don't tell yourself it's "extra." Treat it as already spent, just not yet allocated. That's usually the difference between a wedding that finishes on budget and one that finishes with an uncomfortable conversation about where the money went.
