5 Questions to Ask Before Booking Your Wedding Photographer

Almost every wedding photographer's portfolio looks polished. That's not a useful signal on its own — it's their best 30 photos out of tens of thousands taken over months or years. What actually predicts whether you'll be happy on the day is a handful of practical questions most couples forget to ask until it's too late.

First: who is actually showing up on the day? Many studios book the client with their most experienced photographer in the sales meeting, then send a different, more junior team on the actual wedding date. There's nothing wrong with a junior team if you know that going in — the problem is finding out afterward. Ask directly who will be shooting, by name, and get it confirmed in writing.

Second: how many photos will you actually receive, and how long does editing take? "Unlimited photos" sounds generous but is almost meaningless — what matters is how many are properly edited and delivered, and on what timeline. Four to six weeks is typical; anything open-ended is worth clarifying before you sign.

Third: what happens if they're double-booked or unwell? Indian wedding season means the same date can have five events for one studio. Ask what their backup plan is if your assigned photographer can't make it — a serious studio will have a clear answer, not a shrug.

Fourth: is a second shooter included, or extra? For any wedding above roughly 150 guests, one photographer genuinely cannot cover the groom's side, bride's side, and candid moments simultaneously. Confirm whether a second shooter is already in the quote or a separate line item — this is one of the most common surprise costs.

Fifth: what's not included? Travel costs for outstation weddings, a physical album, drone footage, and same-day edited reels are often quoted separately even when the base package sounds complete. Ask for a single itemised total, not just the headline number.

None of these questions are confrontational to ask — a photographer who's done this professionally will have clear, immediate answers to all five. Hesitation on any of them is worth noting before you pay a deposit, not after.
